One Little, Two Little. . .Indians

After a friend sent me this overly adorable costume for little Wryder (thanks, Emily!!)

This is not Wryder. ;)
This is not Wryder. 😉

I knew I wanted Sawyer to be an indian with him.  Our church’s harvest carnival was this afternoon and we found her costume…….yesterday.  (Phew.)  Nonna let us borrow one she had and I was just gonna take it and add a little fluff/beads/fringe…until Wrexy came across this little number at the thrift store.

She. Is. ADORABLE!
She. Is. ADORABLE!

It was PERFECT (and needed no extra work, mind you!)  I threw together a head dress, painted a couple of stripes, threw on a bow and arrow……and the CUTEST little indian I’ve ever seen made her debut!

I thought the carnival started at 3:00, so we ate an earlier lunch with the thought that the kids would still get a decent little nap in before we had to leave.  I fibbed (oopsie!) and told Sawyer that Mr. Russ (our pastor) said that all the kids had to take a nap or they couldn’t come to the carnival, so she snuggled right down!  Then, I decided to check the official start time.  Good thing I did!  It started at 2:00!  So, no nap for Sawyer.  We got up and got around and dashed out the door.  As we were driving, she said, “Will you still tell Mr. Russ I slept good?”  HAHAHAHA  Oh, geez.

Pretty sure anybody would let this face into the carnival..

Daddy fixed Wryder’s costume so I could wear him in the baby bjourn but have it look like an actual papoose.

He rocked it.

Super fun time with super fun people – how do ya beat that?!  Thursday, we’ll head back to Grant to trick-or-treat downtown and then head home for our annual Phipps Family Camp In!  Until then, we’ll attempt to get a little rest under our belts…

I’m a Puddle

I’m calling this one a “win” for the mom column!

Click on the link below for a cuteness overload…

Sawyer’s first word was “moo” (totally not kidding) followed by “dada”…and then, 3 months later, “momma.”  (Hey, at least she said it!)

ALL day today he’s been murmuring it over and over and not just when he cries.  I’m a puddle.

Fun, Fuzzy Surprise

We woke up to a really fun, fuzzy surprise!  Out of habit, I peaked out the kitchen window to see if the baby calf had made it’s way out of the womb and into the world…and turns out – he did!

Isn't he adorable?!
Welcome to the world, little guy!

Sawyer and I ran to the bedroom to get daddy and we all threw our shoes on and ran outside.  All of the other ladies came to dote on the new baby along with us.

Isn't that what WE do with a new birth, too?
Isn’t that what WE do with a new birth, too?

His momma is a little snarly motherly.  This picture was her charging at me for the umpteenth time.  She did NOT want me anywhere near him and was prepared to take me out.

Get back!
Get back!

I was armed and ready with my sorting stick…and a fence.

Daddy got her away and got iodine on the baby’s navel and off we went to church!  He had sucked before we’d even gotten out there this morning but showed us he knew how just so we felt even better about leaving him.  She seems a little embarrassed about nursing in public (note the ear) but she stood for him.

New life of any kind is an absolute miracle and man, I need life.  This world is so full of injustices; injustices that are hard on my heart.  Satan’s on the warpath out to kill, steal and destroy and as hard as it to comprehend, the Lord allows some of this to happen.  In His sovereignty, He could stop it…but for whatever reason, He doesn’t always.  In our little world alone, there have been moms and babies taken too early, cancer found too late, kids in the system who end up in abusive homes, brain tumors that are growing – and those are just the biggies (in the past WEEK, mind you) that have been weighing on our hearts and minds.  I’m the first to admit that I.don’t.get.it.  I don’t understand…and maybe I won’t this side of heaven.  So I have to turn to what I believe as true.  I have the Word.  And it says the He comes to give life and life abundantly.  Lord, I need that life…and I needed to see this little life this morning.  Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you.

So I have this friend named Stormie. . .

and she’s fabulous!  First, isn’t she gorge?!

Sawyer and Stormie being silly

But she’s a lot more than just a looker!  She’s creative and unique and incredibly fashion forward.  (I don’t know if she knows this, but she’s TOTALLY inspired me to change some things about my wardrobe.  I’m not so matchy-matchy anymore, all because of her.  She’s not afraid of mixing patterns and prints and colors and textures in ways that you think would never work, but then she puts it on and bam – she ROCKS it. And I covet it.  Ahem.)

I keep saying I'm going to steal this head wrap...
I keep saying I’m going to steal this head wrap…

She has a ridiculous eye for all things hip, vintage and in (or about to be in.)  She’s adored by her family and especially her nieces and nephews.  (She takes each of them on a special birthday date – just the two of them.  Who wouldn’t love one-on-one time with Storm?!)  She’s a do-er and a dreamer and she might just be the most generous person I’ve ever met.  And not just with her money, but with her time and resources and brain power.  Did you know she’s one of only three Denver-ites that have been here more than once to see us AND she’s one of the busiest?!  Yeah, she’s cool like that.

Seriously, she wreaks of cool

I’ve had kind of a bleh day and the post-lady called to let me know I had a package that she’d bring down.  I wasn’t expecting anything so I had no idea who it was from or what it might be.  But lo and behold, I should’ve know, sweet Stormie sent us a box FULL of goodies!

Jackpot!
Jackpot!

Three things you must know regarding Stormie’s packages.

1.) They are BEAUTIFUL!  Look at all that color and fru-fru!  She makes EVERY thing she sends so exciting to open.  She takes such care to make sure it’s all just perfect.  The receiver can’t help but feel special because look at all the time she put into the wrapping alone.

SOOO pretty, yes?
SOOO pretty, yes?

2.) There is always something for every single one of us!  Told you she was generous…

This girl LOVES gifts!

Sawyer got a nursery rhyme puzzle set, which we had to do immediately.

Wryder got the CA-YOOTEST little train, which sister so selflessly helped him open.  🙂

And daddy got something, too!  We resisted temptation so he could open it himself.  Aren’t you proud?

He's gonna LOVE that steer head!
He’s gonna LOVE the wrap job

3.) She is a fantastic gift giver!  She knows her audience and always finds the funnest, neatest, chicest things!

I have an affinity for accessories.  Surprised?  I didn’t think you would be.  Fall, for me, pretty much consists of scarves, cardigans, boots and cute earrings.  She nailed it.

She just has this keen sense of how to bless someone.  I recently redid a section of our living room so I could have an official desk to do my blog/ministry/pre-school work and these super cute clips are killing me!  I am so in love with arrows right now.  I have one on my “need want Wrex to make me one” list.

My frown has been turned upside down!  Stormie, THANK YOU for being the kind, generous, hip, loving, beautiful friend sister you are!  Thank you for blessing us with your time and talents and for ALWAYS being up for a roadtrip to come see us.  Speaking of which…

A Birthday Blessing

A wife of noble character who can find?

She sets about her work vigorously;

When it snows, she has no fear for her household;

“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Happiest of birthdays. . .

…to the woman who lets me call her mom; who loves me like I’m her own; who shares her time and energy and resources with me; who helped birth both of my children; who selflessly mentors a younger generation; who is purposefully leaving a legacy of the fear of the Lord; who sees and calls out the things that need to be seen and called out…

…to the woman that forgives freely and laughs easily and hugs tightly and speaks authoritatively (in a good way, oh yes) and loves unabashedly…

…to a discerner, prophecier, encourager, cheerleader, nurturer and creator extraordinaire!

Yes, happiest of days to YOU!  I pray the Lord blesses you with immeasurably more than you could ask or imagine!  I pray that He bestows upon you a NEW thing…that He would make rivers in the desert and a way in the wilderness for you.  I pray that He would give you a crown of beauty for your ashes, a joyous blessing for your mourning, and festive praise instead of despair…that this would be the year He is most glorified in you.

I love you dearly, mom-a-la!  I hope today is sunny and warm; that you have a most excellent hair day; that your tomato plants are bent over with a harvest of deliciousness; that the Partridge Family Sawyer serenades you and that your family spoils you rotten – you deserve all of that and so much more.

Happy Birthday to Goo-Goo!

78 years ago today, Marilyn Maxine Waite was born in Winfield, Kansas.  20 years later, she became Maxine Rusk (upon marrying Arlos) and 27 years later…she became Grandma.  Wrex was her first grandchild and they share such a sweet, sweet bond.

He loves his Granny!

Some of Wrexy’s best and favorite memories are of days spent with Grandma.  He’d go for weeks at a time down to their ranch in Kansas during the summer.  She always cooked his favorite foods and always had a horse lined up for him to ride while he was there.  (She knew the way to his heart, for sure!)

She's always up for an adventure!
She’s always up for an adventure!

I am so incredibly thankful that I get to share Granny right along with the rest of the family.  (I’ve mentioned that I’ve married well, yes?)  She’s a drippy-sweet extrovert who’s gorgeous – inside and out –  and who is always ladylike and put together, no matter the occasion.

She can read and write stories like nobody’s business and is the best person I know at staying in touch with people.  She truly is one of the most generous, engaging, big-hearted, optimistic, beautiful people on the planet!

She is one of our biggest supporters, prayer warriors, cheerleaders, encouragers and exhorters!  (What would we do without this woman?!)  She loves the Lord and is definitely leaving a legacy of the fear of the Lord with her children and her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.

Grandma actually has quite a few names – Grandma Rusk, Granny, Maxine, Great Granny Max…but Sawyer’s favorite is Goo Goo!  One of the grandkids named her that early on and 20 some-odd years later, it’s still sticking!  Sawyer ADORES her Grandma Rusk!  They’ve had the sweetest, sincerest little bond since Sawyer was a tiny, tiny babe.

Goo-Goo is always at the ready to make memories with her family and to pour into them in any way she can.  There is no task too messy or time-consuming; no activity too big or small that she won’t participate in to show love to her kiddos and grand-kiddos.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GRANNY!

We love you so very much and are honored to be a part of your heritage.  You have loved us and cared for us and supported us in so many ways and we are forever grateful for you.  We pray that you are showered with love today, on your birthday…a day that the world most certainly changed for the better.  We love you!

Long Line of Love

Oh, weddings, how I heart thee!  I’m a BIG fan of marriage…and not just because mine rocks.  (As fabulous as he is and as fault-free as I am (ahem) we still work at it every day.)  I love the covenant concept – let’s talk about this more in depth one day, k?  I love how two, individual people really can become one, unified soul.  I love the tradition and the symbolism and the blending of families and lives.  Plus, who doesn’t love a good family reunion/detail-rich party/opportunity to get dolled up and cut a rug?

This weekend, we traveled to south central Nebraska for our cousin’s wedding. Isn’t this cake gorgeous?

The lovely couple was incredibly hospitable and had put so much care into every last detail.  It was a beautiful celebration!

The bride and groom
Mr. and Mrs.

The groom comes from a long line of love.  There are many, many years of sound, successful marriage in his family tree – something that’s a rarity in today’s society, sadly.  Grandad and Grandma Phipps were celebrated as the couple with the longest marriage in attendance – 59 years!  THAT is something to celebrate, with a spotlight dance, no less!

PicMonkey Collage
59 years, people!

I know my little family has been blessed by their love for each other.  I’m sure that they would  admit that everyday hasn’t always been rainbows and roses, but I bet a lot of them have, simply because they’ve never given up on each other.  They’re a team.  Their marriage means something to them.  It’s something that they have put value on; it has worth.  It hasn’t been something that they’ve tossed aside because of a difference of opinions or hurt feelings, and I pray those same things for the newlyweds.

We bless your marriage, in the name of Jesus.  We pray that you would put Him FIRST and your marriage second and that nothing would disrupt that order.  We pray that you would live your lives as one and that you’d be each other’s biggest cheerleaders and number one fans.  We pray that your marriage would be a testament of the love of God to those around you.  We pray that you would have fun together and that you’d always enjoy each other’s company.  We pray that you outlast the elder Phipps’ and continue leaving this legacy of love and the sanctity of marriage for the generations after you.

We, too, come from that same long line of love and can’t wait for our kids to say that one day, too.  Wrexy introduced this song to me when we were dating and it’s still so sweet to my ears.  A little more love for a Tuesday morning…
