Birthday Questionnaire

So, the bestie and her family are some of the best birthday do-ers I’ve ever met!  Their family has taught us so much about honor and they always do unique and meaningful things for each others’ birthdays.

Here lately, they’ve been putting the birthday person in the center of the room and letting each person ask them a thought provoking (usually) question.  On my birthday, I got an e-mail doing just that so I’m going to take the time to attempt to answer them here!

1.) If you could give yourself a birthday gift, something you could have forever that would enable you to fulfill your greatest potential, what would it be?

Oh, geez.  This one is hard for me…maybe because I have to be a bit vulnerable to answer it.  I guess I would have to say a spirit of confidence.  I’ve alluded to the fact that I’m a bit fearful and that rears it’s head into lots of areas of my life.  I fear failure.  I fear coming off as a know-it-all (because those people drive me bananas).   I fear looking silly or missing the mark…so a spirit of confidence – an honest assessment and belief in what I was putting my mind to, would be a good start for me.

2.) What’s your favorite family tradition?

Growing up, I always loved everything about Christmas.  My parents and grandparents always made it fun and exciting.  We would make homemade decorations and put the tree up together…my mom always recruited me to wrap gifts and there was always a viewing of Christmas Vacation.  🙂   While I still LOVE Christmas and love the things we’re doing with our kids (Jesse Tree, Christmas pajamas, The First Noel movie, etc.) I love our little tradition of camping out in the living room on Halloween night.  That started by accident when we first moved to Holyoke.  We had no furniture, as we hadn’t gotten it from Denver yet and so that first Halloween here, we all slept in the living room…which was where we were sleeping while we worked on the bedrooms.  The next year, we did the same thing – but for fun – and have yet to stop!

3.) What book has influenced you most (besides the Bible)?

Hands down, “Walking With God” by John Eldredge.  I’m sure it was a combination of where I was in life and who was leading the study and what the Lord had for me at that specific time in my life, but I learned so much from this book that I still recall and recant to this day!  The title seems to leave a lot to be desired but TRUST ME when I say IT. WILL. CHANGE. YOUR. LIFE!

4.) If you could pick up and move your family somewhere for a year, and then come back (and not have to worry about work the entire time) where would it be?

The selfish side of me would say Alaska.  I have dreams of visiting there one day…  Seeing it on television or in photos it is just breathtakingly gorgeous and I’d love to just camp around and explore all it has to offer!  The missions-minded side of me would say our church’s care point for orphans in Kayango, Uganda.  The trip I took to Venezuela shaped me and molded me and changed me in a way few other things ever have and I’d love to have the opportunity to dote on and serve the least of these again…

5.) What is one thing you will never do again?

Drink until I get drunk.  Not worth it.  Not appealing.  Not wise.  Not an option.

6.) If you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A really good cheeseburger with lots of extras (read – jalapenos!) and some good, salty fries!

7.) How would your best friends describe you?

Probably like this:

What I’ve come to understand about you in the 7-8 years that we’ve been friends is that you are a wise woman beyond your years, loyal to the end, passionate about those you love. You are creative, resourceful, an excellent gift-giver and a skilled event planner. Generous to the bone and loving beyond measure. You’re an incredible mother and a deeply devoted and encouraging wife. You have always been the very definition of a hospitable and wonderful/competent homemaker. You are a chef and an artist. You are beautiful and always fashionable. You are organized and thoughtful. When you set your mind to something, you carry it through all the way, in excellence. We, your friends and family, are so very lucky to have you!

(That was written by the bestie and posted on my Facebook wall for my birthday).  That may or may not be cheating to answer that question.  😉

8.) What’s the most interesting thing you see out your kitchen window?

Currently, a little red wagon that Sawyer planted wheat and marigolds in all by herself.  How cute is that?!

9.) If you had the ability to time travel, would you travel to the past or to the future and why?

Definitely the past.  Mainly, I would talk to the old me and tell me that I’m not fat or as fat as I thought I was…I would tell myself that I was worthy of love…I would tell myself that I didn’t have to vie for the attention of certain people…I would tell myself to prepare for the attacks of satan that I knew would be coming and I would bolster myself with the truth to combat those…I would redo my wedding and make it as magical as I always hoped it would be – I got my prince so that’s really all that matters…

10.) Three sentences looking ahead to when you’re twice the age you’re turning now, describing who you are as a woman and what you’ve accomplished by then so far…

I would be 66…  I see myself still as bat-crazy in love with my handsome husband as I am today if not more so.  I’m assuming I’ll be a grandma – hopefully to lots of little grandcuties that I can spoil rotten!  I’m hoping that all of my mothering and parenting and falling on my knees begging for wisdom will result in children who are all walking closely with the Lord and teaching their families to follow Him, all while living within 15 miles of me. That’d be a pretty great life…

Fun with the Faalands

Oh, friends…we had such a wonderful weekend!  My girl bestie and her family came in from Denver.  The last time she was here was the weekend Wryder was born and she brought a little surprise with her…she had a baby on the way!  This time, sweet baby E made the trip  and she did awesome!

Sawyer was in love, obviously, just like the rest of us.  IMG_4910They played toys and hugged…

IMG_4927played on the playground…DSCF2129and just had a good ole time!

IMG_4928Aunt Dessa even let Sawyer help feed her!

Wryder just held her hand…

IMG_4913Uncle Ryan read some Cinderella…

IMG_4912and Wryder fell in love with his Auntie D!  From the minute he laid eyes on her, he was done for!  All weekend, he’d smile and wave and blow kisses; he’d walk to HER and not me when we were practicing…it was all Dessa, all weekend.

DSCF2151DSCF2152We ventured out to do chores and to let baby E experience a little farm life.  DSCF2119

I’m not sure she knew quite what to think of all of those stinky, noisy guys!DSCF2120DSCF2125DSCF2128She was a trooper, that one!

We watched a movie during naptime and then we got the kids ready for a little water fun!

IMG_4916We didn’t realize that our little pool blew away during the last storm (we’ve been a little busy, ok?!  😉 ) so we had to improvise with a sprinkler and a tarp.

DSCF2130Sawyer and Wryder were all about it…miss E?  Not so much.  🙂

DSCF2135She chose to sunbathe with mom and then go inside for another little snooze.

DSCF2143Wryder had a ball crawling all over the yard and playing in the water!

DSCF2138DSCF2144By Saturday night, the kids were pooped!  We put them in bed and headed out to the fire pit.  It was a gorgeous evening!  There was a breeze, it was a tick chilly, thunderstorms were all around us, we were amongst amazing company…we toasted some marshmallows and indulged in some gourmet s’mores – salted caramel anyone?!  Oh my – they were delish!  It was a good ending to a good day!

IMG_4917I was so sad for Sunday afternoon to roll around…I wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye.  Sweet Tredessa is truly one in a million; irreplaceable, in my book.  She has been such an important part of my life, during the most important parts of my life.  She was the friend I never thought existed; the friend I thought I would never (or could ever) have.  The Lord crossed our paths in some small ways and then BIG ways and I am so glad He did.

She’s been a roommate, a leader, a mentor, a counselor, a sister…she helped me birth my sweet Sawyer (and wasn’t too traumatized to remain my friend after)…she’s been my party throwing co-host, my photographer, my invitation/Christmas card designer…she’s shared her family with me, her time with me, her life with me.  This girl has more wisdom and faith than anyone else her age and I soak it up every chance I get.  She’s my favorite person to solve the problems of the world with…and trust me, we get it all figured out!  For years I said I wanted to be just like her when I grow up…still do.

Being farther away is hard and we each have our own families and lives but she is in my heart.  Always in my heart…

We had so much fun with you guys!  You are most welcome here ANY time, you easy house guests, you!

Bye Bye Love

Daddy’s Christmas break is coming to a close.  (Insert big, pouty, wailing cry here.)  He had a short sale Monday on our way back from Nebraska, so I didn’t really count that one…and I shouldn’t really count tomorrow because we’re going with him…but still, my heart is mourning not having him around all day, every day.  We were incredibly fortunate to have him home for 16 days!  How awesome is that?!  I am sooooo incredibly blessed by his job and his schedule and how much he loves doing what he does.  There aren’t a lot of people out that there that can say that, ya know?  So while we will miss the added help and his silly jokes and his playful spirit and his uncanny ability to do or fix ANYTHING, we shall hand the local sale barns back their “cute Wrex/Superman/sheriff.”  I’m sure they miss him, too.  😉

In celebration of our last day together, we went to town and ate Chinese and played at the park before the cold sets in again.

He has my heart...
He has my heart…
Wheeeeeee!
Wheeeeeee!
Who doesn't love that face?!
Who doesn’t love that face?!

Tonight, we’re cooking up some yummies to take to a special new mommy in Denver.  My bestie had her baby 2 agonizingly long weeks ago and due to several unfortunate incidents I have yet to meet her and IT IS TIME.

You will be seeing LOTS more of this face soon...
You will be seeing LOTS more of this face soon…

So, if you don’t hear from me for a few days, it’s because I’m snuggling new babies and snuggling my man.  I’ll be back soon enough…

Weekend Update

I let this happen…

IMG_2696Paint the cat got to come in the house under the condition that she didn’t let him go.  And she didn’t.  Poor cat.  They did do a little snuggling in bed, to which he purred quite contentedly.

IMG_2697Wryder had got to play dress up with sister.  This is her rendition of King Wryder.  I think he looks quite dashing.

IMG_2686I learned that I need to be a little more specific about what it means when I tell Sawyer to put her cup in the dishwasher.  I couldn’t get on to her, because she DID put her cup in the dishwasher…

IMG_2694We checked out a school auction on Saturday and came home with some fabulous finds, including quite a few old-school, pull down maps for $1!

IMG_2716And we got 36 of these beauties (for $0.11/each!) that can’t WAIT for me to paint them some fun, vibrant color.

IMG_2741WD looked quite dapper sporting orange and blue for the Broncos.  His auntie got him this CA-YOOT vest and we broke it out for the brisk fall day.

IMG_2765We did a little makeup.  And a lot of lipstick.  A looooot of lipstick.  Thankfully, momma spared Wryder from this activity.

IMG_2708I celebrated a #10 showing for the Red Raiders in the BCS standings! They’re playing some really good ball right now!  photoI can’t even begin to tell you how glad I am that Kliff Kingsbury is back in town as head coach.  He played for Mike Leach in the air raid glory days and he’s putting his spin on that style which seems to be working well for us.  Plus, he’s not too bad to look at it…

1176228_10153227924355335_1895838986_nWe mourned a Bronco loss.  🙁

photoI’m not worried about them regarding their standings the rest of the season, I just really wanted Peyton to have a little taste of redemption.

All in all, a really good weekend!  We have a CRAZY, busy week and then this weekend………I get to celebrate my bestie and her sweet baby girl!

Can’t wait to see her/them!  Why-oh-why can’t Denver be in my backyard?!  And why-oh-why can’t the weekend last all week?
