The wheat fields surrounding our house look so pretty and lush right now. (We’ve been fortunate to have about an inch of moisture and are praying for more.) There’s an area of really long grass that butts up to the field to the north so I took advantage of yesterday’s beautiful weather and shot a few pics of the kids. I want to call them “au naturel” because this is how I see them in my mind’s eye…Sawyer with her wild curls, Wryder and is his inquisitive eyes…play clothes and dirt smudges…nothing contrite or over fussed…just my kids. I am so grateful that I get to spend my days with them…

My Brood
Most of you know that we have quite a few chickens running around the place. We have over 50 hens (and way too many roosters) and they dutifully lay eggs for us and our neighbors and several friends from church. I grew up in town and had never really been around them much but I’ve fallen in love with them and joined the chicken loving ranks like the rest of the family.
Wrex grew up raising them and showing them. He’s a bird whisperer, truly.
He’s loved chickens ever since he was a little guy. This is one of my favorite pictures of him…ever…
Our kids have willingly fallen into those same footsteps and we feel so fortunate that we have room to raise a few birds for them to enjoy.
Sawyer’s favorite chicken, Naked, came from this initial group. She’s a Turken, or Naked Neck, and she’s the sweetest little thing!
This chicken loves Sawyer! When she (Naked) sees up pull up from being gone, she will run to the house to greet us! She lets Sawyer pick her up and carry her around. She’s easy to identify, thanks to her lack of feathers on her neck, which was nice when Sawyer was little…she could always pick her out.
We even had to incorporate chickens into her three year photo shoot!
The girl really loves her chickens…
We’ve bought quite a few chicks from the feed store and raised them…
We’ve also had the opportunity to hatch chicks from eggs which is so fun and exciting!
Daddy brought home some Old English bantams the other day. He was soooooo excited, because that’s what he used to show. Sawyer was sooooooo excited to have baby chicks around!
Somebody else has gotten in on the chicken loving…
I think he could stand there and watch them all day. What a good babysitter! 😉
If you ever need a lesson in poultry raising or just want to see some sweet chickens, stop by! We have a few to look at…
The Visitors
We have some visitors out here on the plains.
Their mommy and daddy are at Disney World with the other kids, so we get to babysit. Sawyer named this calf Cinderella way back when she was purchased…and it stuck. I LOVE big, fuzzy-eared cattle. She’s my fave.
She had a calf this past year which is named Gus Gus. Rightfully so.
This little momma’s name is Daisy. We raised her as a bottle calf when we lived in Denver. Wrex’s boss’ family showed her some and then sold her to her new home. She’s as sweet as pie. (Elise – this is the one you fed when you lived with us. You called her Precious, but regardless…)
They’re all gentle ladies. Sawyer likes to treat them (aka entice them to come her way) with a little nibble of corn.
Ozark the pony has been sharing his space with such grace. They’re constantly checking him out. They don’t have much to worry about out, though. He can’t steal their feed as he has no real teeth left. He gets a special senior horse feed which takes a special line in our budget. He’s totally worth it though. More on him some other time. He’s a dandy.
It’s been fun to have a few new projects around. One of the heifers is due to calve any day now and we can’t hardly wait. Hoping I can catch that one on camera. Wish me luck!
