Our Humble Abode: Bathroom

When the Lord provided our little house on the prairie here on the eastern plains of Colorado, we were thrilled to have a place to call home…but home needed a little work.  Mostly paint.  It’s so…what’s the word…interesting?? the paint colors people choose and the previous renters had chosen some interesting ones for sure.  Ahem.

We painted every space, put in new flooring in three rooms and spiffied up the others, built shelves and got creative and just had a grand ole, exhausting time!

Today, I thought I’d give you a little before and after tour of our bathroom.  It was the smallest and easiest for me to throw together this morning.  🙂

Yes, that’s duct tape…

As you can see, it needed a little work.  We replaced the flooring, bath tub, sink and painted the walls.  As weird as it may sound, it’s now one of my favorite rooms in the house!

After:

We’ll start at the bottom and work our way up.  We chose a vinyl flooring that was water proof, not just water resistant.  We kinda figured we might have a little splashing in here from time to time.  This is my favorite flooring in our house, hands down.

New flooring...
New flooring…

We replaced the old sink with one with a much smaller vanity that takes up far less room and hung a new mirror.

We painted the walls a pretty, Tiffany blue and the wainscoting a soft, creamy white.  I found these super cute printables and framed them and Wrex made the mason jar storage.

Our bathroom isn’t huge and there’s not a lot of storage so we’ve had to get creative.  Wrex made these barnwood shelves for the short wall and I love this hanging system from Ikea; cheap, chic and functional!

We replaced the bathtub and then got to work on the shower walls…they are the best part of this room.  I had seen one similar in a magazine one time and I fell in love.  Thankfully, Wrex agreed to give it a try and we both love how it turned out.  It was far cheaper (and easier) to install than tile and much more unique; it’s quite the conversation piece.

Pretty, pretty…

We are so pleased with how it turned out!  It’s been almost three years and the colors and shower walls still make me smile every time I see them.  Let me know what you think about it!  Log in later in the week and we’ll take a peak at another transformation we made…there were a few!  😉

It’s snowing.

It’s May 12th and it’s snowing.

I, for one, am not complaining.  We need the moisture desperately so I refuse to complain about the form from which it comes.  Plus, we’re all beat from a busy weekend and could use some snuggly, relaxing time.

The weather also makes me want to create, thus today’s Pinterest picks.  Enjoy!

Somebunny Turned ONE!

Our sweet little Wryder turned one last week and we celebrated his birthday with family while we were in Nebraska this weekend.  Wrexy’s parents allowed us to raid their home (thank you!) and all of the great-grands made it in, along with Uncle Waco, to celebrate with us!

This was one of the smaller little parties I’ve thrown but, by far, one of my most favorite!

I designed this invitation and then went from there…

WDBdaybunnyinvite2I love lots of color and different patterns and textures and I was really pleased with how everything came together.

We took the little bunny from his invitation, blew it up and then cut it out of foam board.

DSCF1610DSCF1612I knew I already had a lot of bunting going on but I knew I wanted a series of 13 pictures that showed him every month from birth to one year.  I knew Robin had this little tree in the corner of the dining room, so I printed the pictures and then hung them on the tree…

Showered in Love

I’m in event planning mode, which is a great place to be if you’re me.   Between spring weddings and first birthdays, I am ready to par-tay…er, decorate at least.  Today’s lovely spring weather got me thinking about one of my favorite events EVER – my ridiculously awesome baby shower.

My adoptive mom and sisters threw Sawyer and I the most beautiful shower I’ve ever attended, and I’ve been to a few.  It was bright and girly and whimsical and fun – all things that describe Sawyer today.  There were paper chains and flowers; homemade paper fans and pinwheels; little containers of homegrown grass and goldfish in flower vases…no detail was spared – it. was. perfect.

In honor of “throwback Thursday” feast your eyes on this beauty of celebration!

The only thing that could’ve made the day better would have been a little less wind (anybody remember the hurricane force gusts that ripped through Colorado that day?!), but it was still one of those days that I’ll cherish forever.  I’m reliving it now…with extreme fondness…

DIY: Hair Bow

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a lover of big hair…and big hair bows.  Haven’t you heard the old adage, “the higher the hair, the closer to God?”  It’s also true that “the bigger the bow, the better the mom.”  I kid, I kid…  😉

Sawyer was in need of a grey bow for an outfit the other day and can you believe we didn’t have one?!  The horror!  So, I found some ribbon and whipped one up.  I’ve made 90% of her bows 1.) because I’m cheap and 2.) because they’re super easy to make.  I’ll show you!

There are a ton of styles out there; I’ve done two simple versions here, both with the same basic steps.

For the simpler, single stack bow you’ll need:

  • 24 inches of ribbon
  • lighter
  • hot glue gun
  • scissors
  • alligator clip (or your barrette of choice)

Step 1: Sear the ends so they won’t fray.

IMG_4007Step 2: Fold your ribbon in half and press the end to make a crease.  The crease will act as a marker for step 3.

IMG_4008Step 3: Open the ribbon back up and bring one end back to the middle crease, making a cancer awareness sign.  Hold it secure with your finger while you do step 4.

IMG_4009Step 4: Do the same to the other end, making a figure eight.  Secure with hot glue.

Step 5: Bring in each end and secure with hot glue.

IMG_4013Step 6: Take a 6 inch piece of ribbon and tie a knot it the center.

IMG_4011Step 7: Wrap the knot around the center of the bow and secure with hot glue on the backside.

IMG_4014Step 8: Secure your alligator clip to the back of the bow with hot glue.

IMG_4002Step 9: Get a cute little girl to model your bow!

Just don't ask her during her 30 minutes of TV of watching - ha!
Just don’t ask her during her 30 minutes of TV of watching – ha!

For the double stack bow, you’ll need:

  • 24 inches of ribbon
  • 18 inches of ribbon
  • lighter
  • hot glue gun
  • scissors
  • alligator clip (or your barrette of choice)

Step 1: Follow steps 1-5 from above on your 24 inch ribbon.

IMG_3996Step 2: Do the same 5 steps for your 18 inch ribbon.   You’ll now have two, identical bows in different sizes.

IMG_3997Step 3: Stack your smaller bow on top of the larger one and secure with hot glue.

IMG_3999

IMG_4001
I finished this bow with a simple loop instead of a knot. You could also use a button or a jewel or something else funky!

Step 4: Secure your alligator clip to the back of the bow using hot glue.

IMG_4002Step 5: Get a cute girl to model your bow!

IMG_4005

See?  Super cute and super simple!  If you’re wanting to make a bow collection, it’s a good idea to get a few friends together.  Have each person buy different colors of ribbon than everyone else and then share your designs and colors, as one spool will make quite a few bows.  Shoot me a picture of what you make!

Auction Hunters

If you’re not completely appalled at my behavior as a parent and are still reading this blog – thank you!  😉

This past Saturday, we were all so excited that it was supposed to be in the 60’s, so we had made plans to work in the barn and on the chicken house.  We got dressed to go out and the stinkin’ wind about blew us over.  We worked for a bit and then decided to do something a little more fun (and a little less windy).

There was an antique auction about 45 miles from here so we decided to hit the road!  One of the ladies who had a booth in the Ogallala Antique Store decided to sell her collection so we thought we might find some fun things.   We were right!

I found this really fun quilt for one of the guest rooms.  This picture does not do it justice – you’ll have to check it out in person…

DSCF1142 DSCF1145I fell in love with these hens on nests.  They open up and you can put a little something inside…

We found some old pie pans and some little cast iron skillets, which Sawyer immediately called dibs on for her outdoor playhouse…

DSCF1141 DSCF1143And we found this cute little Kitt and Kaboodle doll in great shape and her horse works like a charm.  She is adorable!  Someone really liked her, too…

DSCF1098 DSCF1097The kids did so well at the auction and were so patient and obedient.  Sawyer made friends with a little boy named Travis and they had fun pushing Wryder in the stroller all over the fairgrounds, which he enjoyed as well.

I’m not sure I can pick a favorite…what’s yours?
